Commemorating International Women’s Day, 2012

(March 2012) For over a century, International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated on March 8. On this day, thousands of events are held worldwide to celebrate women and their achievements. In many countries such as Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, and Cambodia, IWD is an official holiday.

Thanks to the growing international women’s movement, which has been strengthened by the United Nations, the day now signifies a time to build support for women’s rights and equality in a number of areas, including health, education, economics, and politics. One of the themes of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures.”
